Golf Course Overview: Sultan's Run Golf Club
Insights From An Insider With Chris Tretter, General Manager/Co-Owner
Local and traveling golfers love to research courses before playing them, whether it is to gain some local knowledge or to set an expectation before their upcoming round. Below is an interview with Chris Tretter who shares some valuable insight about the property, its most talked about holes and the signature dish/drink to consume at the 19th hole.
How Does Your Course Differ From The Others In The Area?
We are a premium, perennial award-winning golf course and a destination for many out of town players. The quality of the course from the Zoysia fairways to the Bentgrass greens to our excellent customer service are unlike any other in the area.
For someone who has not played the course in awhile, has there been any new changes/renovations to the course or property?
This past winter, we cleaned the undergrowth from some wooded areas to increase air flow to some greens and enhance the views from different areas of the course. We also removed some non-native trees and grasses all in an effort to beautify the course.
Upcoming changes include building a golf entertainment venue on the property that will house eight simulators, offices, an outdoor pavilion and a full kitchen for an expanded food and beverage experience. The plan is to have this facility open in the Spring of 2023.
We also are building 10 cottages on our property. Each cottage will have two hotel-like rooms for renting the whole cottage or a lock off to rent one room. This will help to enhance the stay and play packages we currently do with several of our local hotels.
What is your course's answer to Amen Corner? (Describe your best/hardest 3 back/back/back holes)
Holes 13, 14 and 15
Hole 13 is a long par 5 that starts with a downhill tee shot then uphill all the way to the green. Tip: Hit it long and slightly right off the tee or you will end up in the bunker that stretches half way across the fairway from the left.
Hole 14 is a blind tee shot to the lay up area and then an extreme downhill second shot to the green that is guarded by bunkers and penalty area. Tip: Don't try to go for the green. Utilize the lay up area to give you a view of the green.
Hole 15 is a short, but sweet par 4. It has a difficult tee shot with penalty areas on both sides (a creek running on the right and a lake on the left) of the fairway with a bunker running most of the length of the hole. Tip: Stay to the right side of the fairway as the bunker on the left and the water come out more into the fairway than what you can see from the tees.
What is your course's claim to fame, or is there a little known fact that golfers should know about the property?
Sultan's Run is a premium, full-service, perennial award-winning golf course that is home to the most dramatic signature hole in Indiana. But it is not just one hole that makes this course special.
Years ago, this lush land was home to Supreme Sultan, a horse of history and literally a legend in his own time. It was over these hills and valleys of picturesque beauty where Supreme Sultan sired a record number of World Champion American Saddlebred horses. No place on earth can lay claim to this record.
This same ground recalls the heritage of Supreme Sultan, just as an engraved stone marks each unique and challenging tee box, memorializing the name of one of those World Champions. From its very beginning, this land was destined for greatness, but few would have predicted the creation of a world class golf course that would entice champions.
Sultan's Run opened in 1992 but then embarked on an extensive remodeling project in 1996 led by Tim Liddy, taking the golf course to the pinnacle of public golf. Tim says, Sultan's Run offers "one of the best pieces of property I have ever had the privilege to work on. The #18 golf hole alone is incredible and worth the round of golf."
Now in its 30th year, all 18 holes at Sultan's Run Golf Club have been beautified in some shape or form from entirely new bunkering and reconstructed greens, to a complete rework of several holes. Upgrades have been implemented every year for the last decade. The end result is that Sultan's Run is a world class golf facility that golfers will talk about long after their round is done.

Besides golf, what other amenities do you offer if a golfer wants to spend most of the day at your facility?
Currently, we have a full-practice facility consisting of a driving range, short game area, and putting green.
We also have a banquet facility and adjacent covered patio that overlook our 18th Hole green and waterfall that are the perfect spot to host a golfing or non-golfing event. Having an Executive Chef on staff ensures that your food is served fresh and hot using the finest quality ingredients.
Upcoming additions include building a golf entertainment venue on the property that will house eight simulators, offices, an outdoor pavilion and a full kitchen for an expanded food and beverage experience. The plan is to have this facility open in the Spring of 2023.
We also are building 10 cottages on our property. Each cottage will have two hotel-like rooms for renting the whole cottage or a lock off to rent one room. This will help to enhance the stay and play packages we currently do with several of our local hotels.
For the traveling golfer, do you have lodging onsite or partner with any area hotels?
We currently don't have any lodging on site, but we do have a lodge that we are renting this year that is one mile from the course. We also do golf packages with many of our local hotels. All our partner hotels are listed on our website under "Lodging: Partner Hotels."
We hope to have our onsite cottages completed next year.
What is your signature dish, sandwich or drink at the turn or restaurant?
The must have sandwich at the 19th Hole is our Sultan's Supreme Burger. This burger touts a 1/3 pound all-beef patty with Vermont Cheddar, applewood smoked bacon, gourmet pickles, bourbon mustard sauce, lettuce and tomato. To wash down the scrumptiousness of the burger, we recommend the all -popular golfer's drink, the Tito's Transfusion.
